Get a Foundation for Lasting Recovery at Changes Healing Center

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)’s 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 16.5 percent of the United States population ages 12+ met the criteria for a substance use disorder in the past year in 2021.

However, many people don’t get treatment. Substance abuse can worsen without treatment and may lead to serious consequences, including legal, financial, and occupational problems, an increased risk of accident or injury, overdose, coma, and death.

Detox is here to help you get sober and start the process of rebuilding your life. So, what should you know? This article will review everything you should know about detox in substance abuse treatment and how Changes Healing Center can help!

What is Detox in Substance Abuse Treatment?

Detox is short for detoxification. In substance abuse treatment, detox refers to a level of care clients enter to help them through the initial process of getting off alcohol or other drugs. When you are in a detox program, staff provide medical monitoring and may prescribe medications to help you through withdrawal.

Withdrawal is a time when many people are tempted to use it, which is one reason medical detox programs can be helpful. If you are in an inpatient detox program of any kind, you won’t have access to substances and will not be able to use them. Still, this is just one of many reasons to attend medical detox.

Discontinuing the use of substances can come with a range of withdrawal symptoms, which may be mild, moderate, or severe. In some cases, withdrawals can be dangerous. Detox programs are designed to help clients through withdrawal symptoms safely and effectively so that withdrawals are more manageable, less distressing, and do not cause harm to the person.

What are Typical Symptoms of Withdrawal Like?

If you are entering addiction recovery for the first time, you might wonder what to expect during drug and alcohol detox.

The withdrawal symptoms a person experiences will depend on a collection of factors, including but not limited to the type of substance or substances they use, the amount they use, and how often they use.

Keeping in mind that everyone is unique, common withdrawal symptoms include but aren’t limited to the following:

  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping more than usual
  • Changes in appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Shaking or trembling
  • Sweating or chills
  • Irritability
  • Seizures
  • Depression
  • Headaches
  • Cravings
  • Anxiety

The Primary Stages of Withdrawal

There are two primary stages of withdrawal: Acute and post-acute withdrawal.

Acute withdrawal is the first part of the withdrawal process, lasting for two weeks or less. It is when you’re most likely to experience life-threatening withdrawal symptoms. Generally speaking, detox is designed to help clients through this stage of withdrawal.

Post-acute withdrawal lasts for longer and occurs once the initial stages of detox are over. Symptoms such as depression, sleep problems, and other longer-term concerns may occur during post-acute withdrawal. Drug and alcohol rehab can help you through this stage and beyond.

The Role of Detox vs Drug and Alcohol Rehab

What’s the difference between detox and drug rehab?

Detox is most often a short form of treatment that focuses strictly on getting clients off of drugs and alcohol. Usually, drug and alcohol detox is a precursor to an inpatient or outpatient rehab program.

In rehab, clients do the mental health and healing work that will help them build new skills, create healthy routines, and stay in recovery long-term.

Both detox and comprehensive addiction treatment programs play an important role in recovery. Most clients attend both consecutively, starting with detox.

Our Professional Addiction Treatment Programs at Changes

Inpatient Rehab Services

Changes Healing Center in Arizona is here to help you with more than just the initial detox process. Our medically managed residential inpatient and outpatient programs help clients at different points in addiction recovery and have specific features that set one another apart.

Here are the programs or treatment offerings available at Changes Healing Center and how each can help you in addiction recovery.

Medically Supervised Detox

Changes Healing Center offers sub-acute detox services. Sub-acute detox services are best suited to those with non-life-threatening withdrawal symptoms and differ slightly from traditional detox programs. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is available.

If you are in need of a detox program better suited to those with severe or life-threatening withdrawal symptoms, we are in partner with accredited Arizona detox centers and will ensure you or your loved one gets the needed services.

Among other substances, we offer detox services for:

Inpatient Rehab Services

Inpatient rehab is the most intensive form of care offered at our drug and alcohol rehab facility in Arizona. In inpatient treatment programs, clients eat meals, sleep, and live on-site until their program is over.

During the day, inpatient clients at Changes Healing Center engage in a comprehensive set of treatments. These include but aren’t limited to individual therapy, groups, education, medication management, and other activities.

Many clients choose to start treatment for alcohol and drug addiction in inpatient treatment because it provides the most accountability and allows you to immerse yourself in the healing process in a supportive environment. If you or a loved one are facing legal consequences as a result of drinking or drug use, choosing residential treatment during court proceedings can often help lessen the severity of the charges and demonstrate your commitment to the presiding Judge.

No substances are allowed on-site, and you will have the ability to build new patterns away from everyday life triggers.

Partial Hospitalization: PHP Programs for Arizona

Partial hospitalization is one step below inpatient treatment programs. Clients in our partial hospitalization program (PHP) go to their treatment center during the day but return home or to other living arrangements (e.g., sober living facilities) after treatment is over for the day.

Your PHP treatment schedule will consist of regular groups, individual therapy sessions, education, medication management, and other services. These treatments will last for most of the day, so most clients take time off of work or school while in PHP.

Intensive Outpatient: Our IOP Program in Phoenix

Intensive outpatient is the next step below partial hospitalization. Clients in intensive outpatient programs (IOP) have a lighter treatment schedule than those in PHP. While clients still go to their treatment center multiple days per week in our IOP, their schedule will consist of fewer total treatment hours per week.

This makes IOP most suitable for clients who need and are able to balance work, school, or other obligations with treatment.
