We are also Joint Commission accredited, making our medical program a safe and reputable choice for military members. We welcome veterans, active duty service members, families, retired service members, and any other TRICARE member ready for the recovery journey.

TRICARE coverage can help resolve your drug or alcohol addiction and mental health issues – keep reading on to see how we can help you put your TRICARE Insurance to work.

TRICARE Is More Than a Single Insurance Company

TRICARE Insurance is not a single entity. Instead, it’s a comprehensive health care program that covers uniformed service members and their families. Here are some of the TRICARE programs, all of which cover preventive care and wide range of inpatient and outpatieng rehab options:

  • TRICARE Prime
  • TRICARE Select
  • TRICARE Young Adult
  • TRICARE for Life
  • TRICARE Reserve Select
  • TRICARE Retired Reserve
  • TRIWEST

With so many TRICARE Health Insurance options, it can get confusing to you might ask yourself: Will my insurance cover substance abuse treatment?

The short answer to that question is yes; the federal government has considered mental health issues, including addiction disorders, as essential healthcare services since the passage of the Affordable Care Act of 2010.

Still, getting access to these health services can be a bit of a winding road.

Before we discuss what’s covered by TRICARE in detail, let’s address the elephant in the room: Understanding your TRICARE Insurance plan can be extremely confusing. That’s not just Tricare plans – most insurance companies have lots of fine print and confusing language.

It’s beyond confusing. Some past clients have told us it’s downright triggering.

So, contact our admissions team if you need help understanding what your TRICARE Insurance plan covers. After a quick conversation and gathering some basic information from you, we will call TRICARE Insurance to get the answers you need.

All you have to do is call us, tell us about yourself, and leave the confusing TRICARE Insurance details to us. When we call you back, we will reassure you that your TRICARE Insurance is in-network and advise you how much you can expect to pay out of pocket.

TRICARE Coverage for Veterans

Call Changes Healing Center to Help Determine TRICARE Coverage

Before we can call about your TRICARE coverage, we need to get a few details from you. When you connect with us to start the TRICARE insurance determination process, have this information available:

Your TRICARE Insurance Plan Care

We need your group health plan number, individual member identification number, date of birth, and full name as it appears on the card. As mentioned, there are several TRICARE entities. All this information will help to ensure we have accurate, complete data. These are basic identifying facts that TRICARE uses to verify eligibility and approve benefits.

Your Contact Information

We need you to provide our admissions team with a current phone number and address. We need a good, working phone number to reconnect with you after we obtain the preauthorization from TRICARE Health Insurance.

Past Experiences With Substance Abuse Treatment Programs

We’ll ask you to share the outcome of any past treatment program you might have attended. Have you tried outpatient programs only to relapse after a few months? Have you had inpatient treatment with little improvement in your everyday life? This information helps TRICARE determine what has worked in the past and what could be better this time.

For instance, a past experience with outpatient addiction treatment that didn’t work may mean they approve you for residential treatment this time.

Any information we discuss with you is strictly confidential and protected by HIPAA.

We Helped Harrison Get Treatment Covered by TRICARE Health Insurance

‘Harrison,’ an AZ National Guard Reservist, called Changes Healing Center under orders from his commanding officer. He’d reported for a weekend of service and failed a drug test. After speaking with Harrison, our admissions specialist learned that Harrison had attended outpatient rehab in the past and had enjoyed almost six months of sober living before he’d relapsed into heavy drinking.

In recent months, drinking was not enough to keep Harrison calm, so he’d also started to use illegally obtained Xanax pills to stop thoughts from racing in his mind. After learning this information from Harrison, the healthcare provider suggested a screening for anxiety.

Getting In-Network TRICARE Rehab Support

Because our facility accepts TRICARE, we contacted them for Harrison and explained to TRICARE his military background and the anxiety symptoms he’d shared with our team. We also told them about his past, albeit short-lived, success after his first alcohol rehab.

TRICARE agreed with our recommendations and approved Harrison for comprehensive outpatient services, including the screening for and treatment of his anxiety (which proved to be true) and his addictions. Harrison has stopped drinking and abusing Xanax.

His therapist taught him relaxation techniques that don’t require any drugs at all – he meditates and does yoga, instead. Harrison feels confident this time that he has no treatment centers in his future and plans to stay with the Reserves until he can retire with his full retirement.

What Treatment Program Options Are Covered by TRICARE Plans?

CS Lewis Addiction Recovery Quote

Addiction treatment is never a one-size-fits-all solution. TRICARE Insurance recognizes the need for many health care services to suit individual needs. What they approve for members and their families often boils down to healthcare providers’ recommendations.

Changes Healing Center believes in taking a holistic approach. We take tremendous pride in offering our military members and their families with well-rounded, very effective drug and alcohol rehab.

The next sections discuss some health services TRICARE Health insurance will typically cover.

Medical Detox: Detoxification Services to Start Recovery

We commend you for seeking substance abuse treatment. But medical detox is the only safe way to start your program – quitting drugs or alcohol alone at home is very risky.

Shortly after you stop using your drug of choice, your brain begins to panic and sends distress signals to the rest of your body. That starts a series of withdrawal symptoms; most of these are mild to moderate; however, some can be pretty uncomfortable. That’s why TRICARE rehab benefits cover personalized care during this phase.

Medically supervised detoxification means that you have a team of medical professionals at your side. Our team will monitor your wellness and FDA-approved medications to lessen your discomfort and keep you safe.

Medication-Assisted Treatment: Effective Drug and Alcohol Rehab

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) provides clients who might need a gentle off-ramp. In many cases, especially for opioid or alcohol rehab, abruptly stopping the drug of choice can be such a shock to the system that it endangers the client.

Without MAT, these clients may experience life-threatening symptoms, such as vomiting to the point of dehydration or seizures, due to how the drugs changed their brains.

In this case, the healthcare provider will replace the alcohol or opioid drug with a prescription drug as a step-down. As the person progresses in therapy, the clinician will taper down that prescription and eventually end the medically-assisted treatment.

Up To 100% of Rehab Costs Covered By TRICARE

Inpatient TRICARE Rehab Treatment and Outpatient Programs

TRICARE provides comprehensive coverage for inpatient and outpatient services.

About Inpatient Rehab Options

Inpatient rehab, also called residential treatment programs, is usually approved by TRICARE for the most challenging mental health issues and addiction. Inpatient care means around-the-clock monitoring and a highly structured schedule.

With inpatient care, each day is packed with individual therapy, group therapy, and other activities that support better mental health and sobriety.

About Outpatient Treatment Programs

We offer two outpatient care options: Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs. Clients receive the same intensive therapies as inpatient treatment clients with a big difference.

Both the intensive outpatient program and partial hospitalization program allow clients to leave the drug and alcohol rehab center to go home to sleep at night.

These are good for anyone with less challenging or complicated drug and alcohol concerns. This situation is ideal for anyone who needs to balance daily responsibilities (parenting, classwork, or career) with improving their mental health through addiction treatment.

Co-Occurring Disorders: Addiction + Mental Health Treatment

Mental Health Treatment

Co-occurring disorders, or a dual diagnosis, is the term healthcare providers use when clients have both one of the many substance use disorders plus one or more additional mental health conditions.

Kendra Experienced PTSD and Opioid Use Disorder

‘Kendra’ came to Changes Healing Center with a debilitating addiction to heroin. She had significant visible signs of her challenges, such as abscesses and track marks up and down her arms and legs. But we looked past those outward signs and soon discovered that Kendra struggled with complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD).

A top high school gymnast, Kendra had a full-ride college scholarship to her first-choice university. But a severe tumbling injury damaged her neck and led to chronic pain. Her healthcare provider gave her prescription drugs to ease the pain as the tissue healed.

But even worse than that, Kendra lost her spot on the college gymnastics team a few weeks later. Then, a letter in the mail advised her that she’d lost all her scholarship funding when she lost her spot on the squad.

A few weeks before her high school graduation, Kendra’s younger sister passed away from an accidental overdose of Fentanyl. She had taken a fake Xanax laced with Fentanyl. The loss of her little sister was worse for Kendra than the neck injury and losing her chance at college.

A Progression of Self-Medicating Behaviors

Just when Kendra thought things could never get worse, her father, an active duty service member, received orders to deploy to the Middle East. He would leave for another long tour, leaving Kendra to grieve alone.

Kendra’s drug use escalated from prescription drug abuse to heroin. Fortunately, her TRICARE Young Adult covered her.

Changes Healing Center helped Kendra make changes for the better from the inside out. Intensive dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) helped her learn to regulate her emotions. As Kendra began to manage the impact of trauma and worked through the evidence-based program we provided, she became well again.

Kendra is now drug-free; she’s a thriving young woman studying at the local community college. All but a couple of the scars on her arms have faded away, but she considers them battle scars and uses them to have conversations about substance abuse. Kendra’s mission today? She wants to become a grief counselor to help other young people facing challenges like she has overcome.

Evidence-Based Therapies: Individual, Family, and Group Therapy

Detoxification Services to Start Recovery

Substance abuse or addiction treatment is more than stopping the use of illicit drugs or alcohol. Rather, it digs deep into the heart of the cause of someone’s addiction. Without fixing why someone self-medicates with drugs or alcohol, there’s a slim chance that they won’t revert to using it shortly after leaving rehab.

The therapeutic process requires much introspection and soul-searching under the guidance of our licensed, well-qualified counselors.

Both inpatient and outpatient rehab clients experience these key services.

Individual Counseling and Therapy

Clients spend hours of one-on-one time in individual counseling sessions. These therapies help them discover the causes of substance abuse and help them visualize what sober living might look like after addiction treatment.

Family Therapy to Build Stable Bonds

Drug or alcohol addiction harms entire families, which is why the best treatment centers include family counseling in addiction treatment programs.

Trust goes both ways in families. These frayed bonds can often only fully heal with the guidance of a professional counselor leading the conversation.

Group Therapy Builds a Supportive Community

Group Therapy Builds a Supportive Community

Group sessions help those in addiction treatment centers learn from each other and grow. It’s a safe, inclusive space where clients can share their stories and brainstorm strategies to help move forward after addiction.
