Understanding Anxiety Disorders

What is an Anxiety Disorder?

Anxiety Disorders are among the most common mental health conditions, marked by persistent feelings of worry, fear, or nervousness that interfere with daily life. While everyone experiences anxiety from time to time, an anxiety disorder involves intense or chronic symptoms that go beyond typical stress responses.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), anxiety disorders are diagnosed when excessive fear or anxiety causes significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Symptoms can include constant worry, restlessness, muscle tension, difficulty concentrating, irritability, or trouble sleeping.

What Does Anxiety Feel Like?

Anxiety can feel overwhelming and different for each person. For some, it can feel like a tightness in your chest and racing thoughts, while others may experience lightheadedness and irritability.

Common symptoms include:

  • A racing heart or shortness of breath
  • Tight chest
  • Dizziness,
  • Sweating
  • Feeling lightheaded
  • Trembling
  • Constant worrying or racing thoughts
  • Feeling impending doom
  • Fear
  • Irritability
  • Helplessness or heeling overwhelmed
  • Avoidance
  • Difficulty focusing

Anxiety symptoms can vary from mild to intense, and it can interfere with your daily life. Seeking help and support can make a big difference in managing your anxiety.

What Are Anxiety Risk Factors?

Some people are naturally more vulnerable to developing anxiety or anxiety disorders than others. A mix of biological, psychological, and environmental factors often contribute. Genetics, brain chemistry imbalances, and certain personality traits—such as perfectionism, high sensitivity, or difficulty coping with stress—can all increase the likelihood of anxiety.

Life experiences also play a major role. Exposure to trauma, especially during childhood, as well as chronic stress or instability, can heighten the body’s stress response over time. Co-occurring conditions like depression, substance use, or chronic illness can further intensify anxiety symptoms.

Major life transitions, loss, and societal pressures may also act as triggers. Understanding these risk factors is essential for early intervention, self-awareness, and getting the right support before anxiety becomes overwhelming.
